From the Pit to the Palace: Trusting God in the Hard Seasons

Have you ever gone through a season in life where nothing seemed to make sense? Where it felt like everything was falling apart, no matter how hard you tried? Maybe you’ve asked yourself, Why is this happening to me?

I’ve been there. Maybe you have too.

Life has a way of throwing us into unexpected detours: heartbreak, rejection, financial struggles, illnesses, loss. In those moments, it’s easy to feel like a victim of our circumstances, to wonder if God sees us at all.

But what if, instead of asking Why is this happening TO me? we started asking, How is this happening FOR me?

Joseph’s Story: A Journey of Faith in the Unknown

One of my favorite biblical examples of this is Joseph. His life was full of hardships—betrayed by his own brothers, sold into slavery, falsely accused of a crime, and thrown into prison. If anyone had a reason to feel like a victim, it was him.

But Joseph didn’t get stuck in bitterness. He showed up.

In every trial, he worked as if he were serving the Lord. He remained faithful, whether he was in a pit, a prison, or a palace. And because of that, God positioned him for something far greater than he could have ever imagined.

When famine struck Egypt, Joseph, now second-in-command, was the very person his family had to turn to for help. The same brothers who betrayed him now bowed before him, in desperate need of food.

At that moment, Joseph saw the full picture. He realized that everything he went through wasn’t just random suffering—it was God’s preparation.

"You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives." – Genesis 50:20 (NIV)

Is It Happening To You or For You?

It’s easy to look at Joseph’s story and think, Well, of course, it all worked out for him in the end! But what about before the breakthrough?

What about when he was alone in a pit, abandoned by his own family?

What about when he sat in prison, falsely accused?

Joseph had no idea how his story would end. And neither do we when we’re in the middle of a storm. But we do have the same promise: God is with us.

We can either focus on the pain and let it break us, or we can trust that God is using it to make us.

How Do We Walk Through Hard Seasons with Faith?

1. Shift Your Mindset: From “Why Me?” to “What Now?”

Instead of asking, Why is this happening to me? start asking, How can I grow from this?

Hard seasons are refining seasons. God doesn’t waste pain. He uses it to strengthen us, mature us, and prepare us for what’s next.

Ask yourself:

  • What is God trying to teach me through this?

  • How can I honor Him even in the struggle?

  • What if this season is preparing me for something greater?

2. Show Up and Work Like You’re Already in the Palace

One of the most powerful things about Joseph’s story is that he didn’t wait until he was promoted to start working hard. He served with excellence in every season—whether he was in Potiphar’s house, in prison, or in Pharaoh’s court.

Whatever season you’re in, show up. Whether it’s motherhood, your job, your marriage, or your personal growth—serve faithfully and trust that God is positioning you.

"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters." – Colossians 3:23 (NIV)

3. Keep Trusting When You Can’t See the Bigger Picture

Joseph didn’t know that the pit was leading to the palace. He had no way of seeing how his suffering would position him for a purpose.

And yet—he trusted anyway.

We don’t always understand God’s plan when we’re in the middle of it, but we can trust that He sees the bigger picture.

If He allowed it, He will use it.

4. Lean Into Community Instead of Isolating

One of the biggest mistakes we make during hard seasons is isolating ourselves. It’s tempting to retreat when we’re struggling, to put on a brave face while silently battling our pain.

But God designed us for community. We need people who will pray for us, speak life over us, and remind us of truth when we’re too weary to believe it ourselves.

That’s why I created The Circle—a private Facebook group where women can encourage each other, share their struggles, and walk this faith journey together. If you’re going through a hard season, I want you to know: you don’t have to do it alone.

Final Thoughts: God is Writing Your Story

Whatever you’re facing today, I want to encourage you: This is not the end of your story.

The pit is not the end. The prison is not the end. The heartbreak is not the end.

God is still working.

So keep showing up. Keep trusting. Keep believing that the pain isn’t happening to you—it’s happening for you. Because one day, you’ll look back and see that God was leading you to the palace all along.

You are not alone. You are not forgotten. And you are exactly where God needs you to be.
