Leading the Way: A Mother’s Influence in Her Child’s Life
Motherhood comes with many roles—some that fill our hearts with joy, and others that feel a little less glamorous. One of the most important and challenging roles we carry? We are guides, leading our children through life’s journey.
From the moment they take their first breath (literally), we are there—helping, teaching, encouraging, and leading.
We are their first teachers, their first role models, their first examples of faith, kindness, and resilience. Every milestone they reach—whether it’s sleeping through the night, learning to tie their shoes, or developing strong character—happens because they had a mother who walked alongside them, showing the way.
More Than Just Giving Directions
Motherhood isn’t just about pointing them in the right direction—it’s about walking that path with them.
I was reminded of this recently with my daughter, Philisiwe. She’s six now, and like most kids her age, she’s full of curiosity and endless questions. The other day, she asked me why she has to say “thank you” even when she doesn’t feel like it.
At first, I laughed, because—well, six-year-old logic. But then I realized this was one of those teachable moments. I could have just told her, “Because it’s polite,” and left it at that. But instead, I showed her.
I started making a point of verbalizing gratitude more often—thanking her when she helped with small things, thanking God out loud for little blessings in our day. And little by little, I noticed her doing the same. Not because I told her to, but because she saw it in me.
That’s when it hit me: our children won’t just do what we say—they will do what they see.
You can’t just tell your child to be kind; they will learn kindness by watching how you treat others.
You can’t just tell them to trust God; they will learn faith by seeing how you trust Him in hard times.
You can’t just tell them to love reading the Bible; they will develop that habit by seeing you open His Word first.
Our children will often reflect what they see in us. They will learn joy if we model joy. They will develop confidence if they see us walking in faith. They will find strength if we show them how to lean on God when life gets tough.
Following the Right Path
As we lead our children through life, it’s important to ask ourselves: Are we following the right path?
The world is full of confusing and contradicting messages about what success, happiness, and fulfillment look like. But as moms, we have been given a trustworthy roadmap—God’s Word.
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” – Psalm 119:105
If we want our children to grow into kind, faith-filled, and purpose-driven individuals, we need to make sure we are walking in that direction first.
So today, take a moment to reflect:
What lessons are you teaching—not just with words, but with your life?
Are you leading your child down a path that brings them closer to God?
Are you walking in faith, modeling peace, and showing love?
Motherhood is a journey, and as you guide your little ones, know that God is guiding you too. Keep your eyes on Him, and you will always lead them in the right direction.
