You Were Made for This: Embracing Your God-Given Assignment in Motherhood

Some days, I wonder if I’m really cut out for this whole motherhood thing. The responsibility is immense—the constant nurturing, teaching, guiding, and loving. There are nights when exhaustion sets in so deeply that I feel like I’m running on empty, and doubts creep in. Am I doing this right? Am I enough?

Not too long ago, I had one of those moments. Philisiwe, my sweet and spirited six-year-old, had a meltdown over something seemingly small—her favourite toy had gone missing. As I knelt beside her, trying to calm her tears, I felt an overwhelming wave of self-doubt. Do I have the patience for this? Am I teaching her how to handle emotions well?

Then, something incredible happened. Through her sniffles, she reached for my hand and whispered, "Mama, you always know how to make things better." It was such a simple statement, but it hit me like a divine confirmation. God reminded me in that moment that I was made for this. I was handpicked to be Phili’s mother, just as He has chosen you for your own unique assignment in motherhood.

Designed for a Purpose

Motherhood isn’t just something that happens to us—it is a divine calling. Just like God told Jeremiah, “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you” (Jeremiah 1:5), He knew you would be the mother of your children. Every late-night feeding, every scraped knee you kiss, every lesson you teach—it’s all part of a greater purpose.

We often get caught up in the idea that we need to have everything figured out. We question whether we’re good enough, wise enough, or strong enough. But the truth is, our ability to mother well doesn’t come from our perfection—it comes from God’s presence in our lives.

You Don’t Have to Have It All Figured Out

Jeremiah doubted his ability to fulfill God’s calling, just as we sometimes doubt our ability to mother well. But God didn’t say, “Figure it out first, and then I’ll use you.” No, He told Jeremiah, “Do not be afraid… for I am with you” (Jeremiah 1:8).

That’s the promise we cling to in motherhood. We don’t need to have all the answers. We don’t need to be perfect. We just need to be present, faithful, and willing to trust that God will equip us for the journey.

Motherhood is Your Ministry

Whether you’re a working mom, a stay-at-home mom, a single mom, or somewhere in between, your role as a mother is a sacred assignment. You are raising the next generation, shaping hearts, and sowing seeds of faith, love, and character.

So when the days feel long and overwhelming, remember this:

• God knew exactly what He was doing when He chose you to be your child’s mother.

• You don’t need to be perfect—you just need to be present and willing.

• His strength is made perfect in your weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9).

The next time doubt creeps in, take a deep breath and remind yourself: I was made for this.
