Body and Soul: When the Heart Speaks, the Body Listens

Have you ever been so stressed that it physically hurt? I know I have. As I speak, I am currently in a season of life where everything feels so overwhelming— juggling between my newborn and my six year old, unemployment, strain on my relationship, and just trying to hold it all together. I'm not really sleeping well, my appetite is all over the place, and my body constantly aches... for no reason. At first, I brushed it off as exhaustion, maybe even burnout. But deep down, I know there is more to it.
One evening, after putting the girls to bed, I sat alone with my thoughts and finally admitted something to myself: I had been carrying guilt and shame over things I haven't properly dealt with. Things I've had buried under the 'hecticness' of life. It wasn’t until I stopped, reflected, and prayed that I realized just how much my inner struggles were affecting my physical well-being.

The Connection Between the Heart and the Body
We often think of mental, emotional, and physical health as separate things, but they are deeply intertwined. When we carry unresolved emotions—whether it’s guilt, shame, anxiety, or bitterness—our bodies respond. Stress can lead to headaches, tension, sleepless nights, and even long-term health issues.
Psalm 32:3-4 describes this so well:
"When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer."
David, who wrote these words, was talking about the weight of unconfessed sin in his life. But whether it’s sin, unforgiveness, stress, or emotional burdens, when we keep things bottled up, they manifest in our bodies. It’s not just a spiritual truth—it’s something even science confirms.
When Carrying Guilt Becomes Too Heavy
David knew this firsthand. He had messed up in a big way. He had sinned, and instead of facing it, he tried to hide it. But it didn’t stay hidden—it began to eat away at him from the inside out. His body felt the burden of his unrepented heart.
I can relate. Maybe you can, too. Maybe there’s something weighing on you—something you haven’t fully dealt with. It might be a mistake from the past, a strained relationship, or even just the feeling that you’re not where you’re supposed to be. Whatever it is, pretending it’s not there won’t make it go away. It will only drain you, little by little, until you have nothing left.

The Power of Letting Go
The good news? Healing begins the moment we choose to let go. David finally reached that point in Psalm 32:5:
"Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the Lord.’ And you forgave the guilt of my sin."
It wasn’t a change in diet or a new self-care routine that restored him—it was confession, honesty, and the grace of God. The moment he laid it all down, he experienced freedom.
I won’t pretend that one prayer or one deep conversation with God will instantly erase years of stress or guilt. But I do know that ever since I started opening up to Him—truly laying down the things that have been weighing on me—I have felt lighter. My aches and pains aren’t as frequent. My sleep has improved. My joy has returned.
A Gentle Invitation
So, here’s my invitation to you, Sis: Take a moment to check in with yourself. How is your heart? What have you been holding onto that might be affecting not just your emotions but also your body?
Maybe it’s time to have an honest conversation with God. Maybe it’s time to forgive yourself for something you’ve been carrying. Maybe it’s time to let go of bitterness, fear, or anxiety.
And if you’re not sure where to start, let Psalm 51 be your guide—a heartfelt prayer from David after he finally stopped running from his guilt.
"Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me." (Psalm 51:10)
Let today be the day you start walking a little lighter. You don’t have to carry it all alone. Your body and soul will thank you for it!
