When You Feel Overwhelmed: Finding Peace in the Chaos

Let’s be honest—life can be a lot. Some days, it feels like you’re barely keeping your head above water. The house is a mess, work deadlines are piling up, the kids need your attention, and somewhere in between, you’re supposed to take care of yourself too. It’s exhausting, isn’t it?
I’ve had moments where the weight of it all feels suffocating. My mind races with everything that has to get done, but my body just doesn’t have the energy to keep up. Some days, I feel stretched in a million directions—torn between frustration, exhaustion, and the overwhelming feeling that I’m constantly behind.
If you’ve ever felt this way, I want you to know: you are not alone.
Feeling overwhelmed is not just about having too much on your plate; it’s also about how we process everything happening around us. Our minds feel cluttered, our hearts feel heavy, and before we know it, the stress spills over into our bodies. Suddenly, we’re snapping at the people we love, feeling physically drained, and struggling to find joy in the little things.
So how do we step out of this cycle? How do we create space for peace and wellness in the middle of life’s chaos?

1. Breathe, Pause, and Reset
When I’m feeling overwhelmed, the first thing I need to do is pause. But let’s be real—that’s usually the last thing I want to do. My instinct is to push through, to keep going, to cross off more things on my never-ending to-do list.
But here’s the truth: You can’t pour from an empty cup.
When stress starts to take over, stop for just a few minutes and try this simple breathing exercise:
Inhale deeply for four seconds.
Hold for four seconds.
Exhale slowly for six seconds.
Repeat.
This small but powerful practice signals to your body that it’s safe to slow down. It lowers your stress response and helps clear your mind, even in the busiest moments.
2. Reframe the Overwhelm
Sometimes, feeling overwhelmed isn’t just about what’s on our plate—it’s about how we perceive it. Instead of telling myself, “I have too much to do, I’ll never get it all done,” I try to shift my mindset to:
“I don’t have to do everything at once.”
“I am capable, but I don’t have to be perfect.”
“I am allowed to take breaks.”
By shifting my perspective, I remind myself that I am not defined by my productivity. I am allowed to move forward at my own pace.
3. Move Your Body, Nourish Your Soul
Stress and overwhelm don’t just live in our minds—they settle into our bodies too. That’s why movement is essential for wellness. When I feel stressed, I try to do at least one of these:
Take a 10-minute walk outside and breathe in the fresh air.
Stretch for a few minutes to release tension in my shoulders and neck.
Dance in my kitchen while making dinner (yes, even if my daughter rolls her eyes at me!).
Movement isn’t about checking off another task—it’s about feeling better. It’s about creating space for yourself in the middle of life’s demands.

4. Create a “Calm Corner” in Your Day
If we’re not careful, our days can become non-stop noise—emails, social media, endless notifications, and the constant demands of others. That’s why I love the idea of creating a “Calm Corner” in my day.
This is a small, intentional pocket of time when I step away from the noise and focus on stillness. Here are a few simple ways to do this:
Wake up 10 minutes earlier and enjoy your coffee in silence before the house wakes up.
Light a candle and listen to calming worship music.
Sit outside, close your eyes, and just breathe.
Journal your thoughts and prayers, releasing the weight of your worries onto the page.
When we intentionally carve out moments of peace, we equip ourselves to handle life’s chaos with more grace.
5. Protect Your Peace: Learn to Say No
Overwhelm often happens when we’re overcommitted. It’s okay to set boundaries. It’s okay to say no. You don’t have to be available 24/7.
Ask yourself:
Does this align with my priorities right now?
Will saying yes bring me joy, or just more stress?
Am I saying yes because I want to, or because I feel guilty?
Protecting your peace doesn’t mean you stop helping others—it means you recognize your own limits and honour them.
6. Connect, Don’t Isolate
When we’re overwhelmed, it’s tempting to retreat into ourselves. But that’s exactly when we need support the most.
I know what it feels like to put on a brave face while silently struggling inside. But I also know the power of community—of surrounding yourself with people who uplift, encourage, and remind you that you are not alone in this journey.
That’s why I created The Circle—our private Facebook group for women who want a space to be real, to share their hearts, and to walk this wellness journey together.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, I’d love for you to join us.

Remember, overwhelm does not define you. You are strong. You are capable. And most importantly, you are worthy of peace, rest, and joy.
Take a deep breath. You’ve got this.
